THE ARTS OF INTERCESSORY MINISTRY.

By Isaiah-Phillips Akintola

The Power and Effect of Intercession
The art of intercession is beyond our traditional concept of prayer. It calls us into a deep and profound comprehension of a sacrificial way of lifestyle that collaborates with the forces of heaven to bring about reformation and transformation to society. It flows from a selfless heart, fully and wholly devoted to God’s kingdom purposes and prophetic mandate for man and creation. When we intercede, we step into a sacred calling, standing in the gap in relentless love and courage, aligning earthly realities with the divine will to shift the course of human affairs for individuals, communities, and entire nations.

At its core, intercession is an act of love; it’s an intentional, Spirit-led intervention on behalf of others. It’s the moment when a human heart aligns with God’s heart, pleading for His mercy, justice, and purposes to manifest in the earth. Whether it’s for a family member, a city, or an entire nation, intercession carries the weight of heaven’s redemptive plan. The Bible is filled with examples of intercessors who changed the course of history through their relentless, heartfelt prayers: Daniel, Nehemiah, Abraham, Moses, and countless others who stood before God on behalf of broken people and wayward nations.

Consider Daniel’s story in Babylon (Daniel 10). From the moment he began to pray, God dispatched an answer, but a spiritual adversary, the prince of Persia, hindered the response for 21 days. Daniel’s persistence in prayer, coupled with angelic intervention, ultimately broke through the resistance. This account reveals a critical truth: intercession is not just a spiritual exercise; it’s a confrontation with unseen forces that seek to oppose God’s will. It requires tenacity, spiritual insight, and a deep understanding of the agencies at play in the spiritual realm.

Intercession is heaven’s ordained mechanism for transformation. If a nation is to experience revival, renewal, or restoration, it begins with a people who understand the ministry of intercession. These intercessors are the forerunners of change, the ones who labor in prayer to align earthly realities with heaven’s purposes. But to be effective, intercession demands more than fervent prayers; it requires a clear understanding of the spiritual dynamics involved and a heart fully surrendered to God’s redemptive plan.

The Dynamic Nature of Intercession:
Intercession is a dynamic ministry, marked by various levels, facets, and visionary objectives that work together to fulfill God’s purposes. One foundational aspect, particularly when seeking to transform a nation, is illustrated in Exodus 17:8-16, where Moses, Aaron, Hur, and Joshua exemplify the collaborative power of intercession. In this account, Moses stands on a mountain, his hands lifted toward heaven, seeking God’s help as Joshua fights the Amalekites below.

The Bible tells us that Moses’ hands grew weary, a natural reality in the challenges of life and ministry. At this critical moment, Aaron and Hur stepped in, upholding Moses’ hands to sustain his intercessory posture. Their support ensured that Joshua’s battle on the ground was victorious, directly tied to Moses’ position on the mountain. This vivid picture reveals the interconnected roles within intercession: the leader who intercedes, the warriors who engage in the battle, and the supporters who lift up the visionary, ensuring the victory is won. Aaron and Hur’s ministry of presence and encouragement highlights the vital role of intercessors who uphold others, strengthening the collective effort to see God’s purposes manifest.

The Standards for Effective Intercession
Effective intercession is not haphazard; it operates within a divine framework that respects spiritual laws and principles. To engage in this ministry with impact, we must understand the key agencies involved and the standards that govern their interactions. These standards provide a roadmap for intercessors, ensuring their prayers are not just heartfelt but also strategically aligned with God’s prophetic purposes and visionary objectives.

The Role of Christ and the Holy Spirit
At the heart of intercession is the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. His shed blood grants us access to the throne room of God (Hebrews 4:16), where we can approach the Father with boldness and confidence. Without this redemptive foundation, our prayers lack the authority to shift spiritual realities. Jesus, our High Priest, is the ultimate Intercessor (Hebrews 7:25), constantly interceding for us before the Father. The Holy Spirit, our Helper, empowers our prayers, guiding us into truth and helping us pray according to God’s will (Romans 8:26-27).

Effective intercession begins with a deep reliance on Christ’s redemptive work and the Spirit’s guidance. We must approach prayer with the assurance that we are not pleading from a place of defeat but from a position of victory, secured by the cross. This understanding frees us from guilt and condemnation, enabling us to stand confidently as ambassadors of heaven.

The Role of Humanity as Earth’s Stewards
God has entrusted humanity with the responsibility of stewarding the earth (Genesis 1:28). As His representatives, we are called to govern in the spiritual realm through prayer and intercession. This is not a passive role but an active one, requiring us to exercise the authority delegated to us. Intercession positions us as co-laborers with God, partnering with Him to enforce His kingdom purposes on earth.

However, this responsibility demands maturity. We cannot intercede effectively if we are entangled in the patterns of the fallen Adamic nature: selfishness, fear, or condemnation. Romans 8:1 reminds us, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” A renewed mind, rooted in our redeemed identity, is essential for effective intercession. When we pray from a place of spiritual alignment, we carry the weight of heaven’s authority to confront darkness and declare God’s purposes.

The Role of Satan and Fallen Angels
Intercession is a spiritual battle, and we cannot ignore the reality of the adversary. Satan and his forces actively oppose God’s plans, seeking to frustrate the prayers of the saints (Ephesians 6:12). The story of Daniel illustrates this vividly; the prince of Persia resisted God’s answer until angelic reinforcement arrived. Intercessors must be aware of the spiritual forces at work, discerning the schemes of the enemy and standing firm in their authority in Christ.

This requires spiritual discernment and perseverance. The enemy often uses deception, distraction, or condemnation to paralyze intercessors, causing them to doubt their effectiveness or give up prematurely. By rooting ourselves in God’s Word and relying on the Holy Spirit, we can overcome these tactics and press through until breakthrough comes.

The Arena of Contention
Intercession is not a vague, abstract practice; it takes place in specific arenas, whether it’s a family, a community, or a nation. Understanding the context of our prayers is critical. What are the spiritual, cultural, and social dynamics at play in the arena we’re contending for? For example, when interceding for a nation, we must consider its history, strongholds, and redemptive purpose in God’s plan. This requires research, discernment, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Effective intercessors are like lawyers in a courtroom, presenting a case with clarity and authority.

They study the “facts” of the situation, align their prayers with God’s Word, and plead for His intervention. Ignorance or lack of preparation weakens our intercession, just as it would weaken a lawyer’s case. By understanding the arena of contention, we can pray with precision and power.

Intercession, Catalyst for Change
Intercession is the engine of transformation, the means by which heaven’s purposes are birthed in the earth. It’s a ministry that transcends time and space, touching the eternal and reshaping the temporal. When we intercede, we partner with God to release His mercy, justice, and restoration into broken places. This is particularly critical when contending for the soul of a nation.

Nations are not transformed by political strategies or human effort alone; they are transformed when God’s people stand in the gap, crying out for His intervention. Ezekiel 22:30 speaks of God seeking someone to “stand in the gap” for the land, so He would not have to destroy it. Intercessors are those gap-standers, the ones who hold back the tide of judgment and usher in seasons of revival and renewal.

Example of individuals who had the spirit of intercession.
Enoch walked so closely with God that his life became a testimony of dependence on divine wisdom (Genesis 5:24). His example teaches us that intimacy with God is the foundation of intercession. Noah stood as a righteous intercessor in a corrupt generation, building an ark that preserved humanity and creation (Genesis 6-9). His obedience in the face of ridicule models the perseverance required in intercession.
Abraham pleaded for Sodom and Gomorrah, demonstrating the compassion and boldness of an intercessor (Genesis 18:22-33). His prayers reveal that intercession can shift God’s response, even if the ultimate outcome depends on human repentance.

Moses laid down his life for Israel, pleading for God’s mercy when they rebelled (Exodus 32:11-14). His willingness to sacrifice himself for his people mirrors the heart of Christ and sets a standard for sacrificial intercession. David, a man after God’s own heart, interceded through worship and repentance, leading Israel into deeper alignment with God (Psalm 51). His life shows that intercession is not just petition but a lifestyle of surrender. These biblical figures demonstrate that intercession is not reserved for a select few; it’s the calling of every believer who desires to see God’s kingdom come. Whether through quiet prayers in a closet or bold declarations in a public square, intercession moves the heart of God and shifts the spiritual atmosphere.

The effects of intercession are profound, rippling across individuals, communities, and nations. When we intercede, we release God’s power into situations that seem impossible. We see this in the transformation of cities like Nineveh, which was spared destruction because of Jonah’s reluctant obedience and the people’s repentance (Jonah 3). We see it in the early church, where fervent prayer led to miraculous deliverances and the spread of the gospel (Acts 12:5-17).

Intercession has the power to:
Break Spiritual Strongholds: Through intercession, we confront principalities and powers, dismantling their influence over nations and individuals (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Release God’s Mercy: Intercessors plead for God’s compassion, turning back judgment and opening doors for revival (Lamentations 3:22-23). Align Nations with God’s Purposes: By praying for leaders, systems, and cultural values, intercessors help nations fulfill their redemptive destinies (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Heal Brokenness: Intercession brings God’s healing to families, communities, and societies wounded by sin, injustice, or trauma (Psalm 147:3).

In the context of a nation, intercession is a clarion call to contend for its soul. Every nation has a unique purpose in God’s plan, but the enemy seeks to distort that purpose through division, corruption, and spiritual blindness. Intercessors, armed with spiritual authority and guided by the Holy Spirit, stand as watchmen on the wall, declaring God’s truth and calling forth His redemptive plan.

Despite its power, intercession is not without challenges. Many believers shy away from this ministry because of spiritual, emotional, or psychological barriers. One of the greatest obstacles is the spirit of condemnation, which the enemy uses to paralyze intercessors. When we carry guilt or shame, we struggle to pray with confidence, feeling unworthy to approach God’s throne. Yet Romans 8:1 assures us that in Christ, we are free from condemnation. Embracing our redeemed identity is the key to unlocking bold, effective intercession.

Another obstacle is ignorance, praying without understanding the spiritual dynamics at play. Like a lawyer unprepared for a case, an intercessor who lacks knowledge of God’s Word, the enemy’s tactics, or the context of their prayers will struggle to see results. This is why intercession requires study, discernment, and a commitment to grow in spiritual maturity. Finally, perseverance is often tested in intercession. Like Daniel, we may face delays or resistance in the spiritual realm.

The temptation to give up can be strong, but Galatians 6:9 encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest. Intercessors must hold fast, trusting that God is working even when the results are not yet visible. As we stand at the crossroads of history, the call to intercession has never been more urgent. Nations are grappling with division, injustice, and spiritual darkness, but God is raising up a generation of intercessors to contend for their transformation. These are not just people who pray; they are warriors, priests, and ambassadors who carry the heart of God into the earth.

To engage in this ministry, we must:
Root Ourselves in Christ: Our authority as intercessors flows from our union with Jesus and His redemptive work. Rely on the Holy Spirit: He guides our prayers, giving us insight and power to pray effectively. Understand the Arena: Study the spiritual and cultural dynamics of the nation or situation you’re praying for. Persevere in Faith: Trust God’s timing and remain steadfast, even in the face of delays or opposition. Pray with Compassion: Let love for God’s people and His creation fuel your intercession.

Intercession is not just a carnal task; it’s a lifestyle, a sacred calling to partner with God in the redemption of the world. As we contend for the soul of our nations, let us do so with boldness, humility, and unwavering faith, knowing that our prayers have the power to change history and continue to advance the kingdom of God within human affairs.
